Twitter Tips for new tweeters

1 September 2010

Hello Internet.

This is my first of a series of blog posts that will provide simple, effective tricks to help you promote your small business online.  I have purposefully kept the tips simple so that you can easily integrate these tips into your new Social Networking strategy.  In the future I will be posting progressively more advanced tips and tricks.

If you are interested in having us post on a specific topic, contact us and let us know.

We want to cut through all the clutter you hear online and give you specific examples of effective social media tactics that you can use for your business.

Love to hear from you!

Okay…. let’s get started….

Create a cool twitter background

• Nobody wants to look at your boring default twitter page.  Spice it up with a really cool background graphic that matches your companies brand.

Make your tweets retweetable

• Try to link to something in your tweet… i.e. a blog post, photo, video, etc.
• Keep your tweets well under 140 characters… that makes it easier to retweet your message
• Try to tweet at least once a day (and at different times of the day)
• Make your tweets interesting

Follow People

• Follow anyone who follows you (and unfollow spammers).
• Support everyone and anyone who you follow or is following you (especially the least popular ones)
• Retweet as much as possible
• Follow people of similar interests

Update your profile

• Make sure you add your bio and picture. People like to know who they are tweeting to.
• Make sure you link your twitter account to your blog or website
• Share your twitter name on your facebook page, LinkedIn profile and other social sites that you use.

Tools of the tweeter

• Use Tweekdeck (http://www.tweetdeck.com/)
• Use URL Shorteners to keep your tweets small (http://bit.ly/)
• Read the twitter blog (http://blog.twitter.com/)
