Random musings on “random”

23 July 2010

So we’re going to be fixing up our little blog here at Cossette East. One of the things we will be doing is tagging our posts to help categorize them better. To help usability, create a tag cloud, etc, etc, etc.

So the question came up, what do we call that catch all category for the posts that we write that are so interesting and amusing, and yet, really don’t belong to any of our usual categories? The consensus around here was to use the term “random”.

Now I must confess that this post is partly just so I can stake my claim to the random category and say “first!” and also partially a misguided attempt at rebelling against the notion that things I write can be readily categorized. But also, I must confess, I initially had a few pangs of concern about the use of the word random. Does it make us sound haphazard? disorganized? accidental? Maybe… but I suppose when I really think about it I can acquiesce that it is actually the most descriptive and accurate category to use.

Anyhow, at the risk of digressing further into the depths of randomness, I’m including some links I came across when trying to find wittier and better synonyms for this category:

There’s actually an organization dedicated to ensuring people who need them have TRULY random numbers!

Also of note is the visual thesaurus version of the entry for “random” at thesaurus.com.

A snippit of the visual thesaurus.

And of course, if you really need to kill some time you can surf the web via random website dot com!

So the moral of the story here, is if you set out to try to avoid using the term “random” on your blog, you may just find yourself in a random, self-fulfilling, endless loop of an exercise which only serves to validate the opinion of your colleagues… Which is exactly what happened to me….
